What is the definition of Development length?

The development length is a function of the bar size, yield strength, concrete strength and other factors such as coating of the bar.It is usually 12D where D is the nominal diameter of the reinforcement. Also, the development length of a bar is dependent to whether the bar is in tension or compression.
